What is the Imposter Game?

The Imposter Game (also spelled impostor game) is a social deduction party game for groups. At the start of a round, every player secretly receives the same word — for example Pizza — but one player receives nothing. That player is the imposter.

Going around the group, each player says one short clue about the word without naming it. The imposter has to improvise a clue that sounds convincing, even though they have no idea what the word is. After a round or two of clues, everyone votes on who they think is faking. Catch the imposter and the group wins; vote wrong and the imposter escapes.

It is the same tension that makes games like Spyfall, Chameleon or Werewolf great — but you only need one phone and three friends. Read the complete rules and walkthrough if your group is playing for the first time.

How to play in 4 steps

  1. Set up. Add player names above, choose how many imposters you want, and pick word categories (or leave it random).
  2. Pass the phone. Each player privately taps to see the secret word. The imposter sees “You are the imposter” instead — plus an optional hint.
  3. Give clues and discuss. One clue each, around the group. Too vague? Suspicious. Too specific? Also suspicious.
  4. Vote. Everyone votes for the player they suspect. The most-voted player is revealed — imposter caught, or great escape.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Imposter Game?

The Imposter Game is a social deduction party game. All players receive the same secret word except one — the imposter. Players take turns describing the word without saying it, then vote on who they think is faking. The imposter wins by staying hidden or by guessing the word.

How many players do you need for the Imposter Game?

You need at least 3 players, though 4–10 is the sweet spot. With larger groups you can add a second imposter to keep rounds tense. On this page you can play with 3 to 12 players on a single phone.

Can I play the Imposter Game online for free?

Yes. The version on this page is completely free, runs in your browser and needs no download or sign-up. You play pass-and-play style: one device is shared by the whole group.

Does the imposter know they are the imposter?

Yes. When the word is revealed, the imposter sees "You are the imposter" instead of the word, plus the category and (optionally) a small hint. Their job is to blend in and describe a word they do not actually know.

What happens if the imposter is not caught?

If the group votes out the wrong player, the imposter escapes and wins the round. Many groups also give the imposter a chance to win even when caught: if they can guess the secret word, they steal the victory.

Is the Imposter Game the same as Among Us?

They share the imposter idea, but they are different games. Among Us is a video game with tasks and maps; the Imposter Game is a word-based party game you play face to face — closer to games like Spyfall or Chameleon.

What are good words for the Imposter Game?

Good imposter words are common enough that everyone knows them, but rich enough to describe in many ways — animals, foods, places, professions and famous people all work well. See our full word list with hundreds of options across 12 categories.

Can I play the Imposter Game on my phone with friends in the same room?

Yes — that is exactly how it is designed. You pass one phone around the group so each player privately sees the word (or finds out they are the imposter), then you discuss and vote face to face.
